The weekend of November 2-5, 2017 saw two of Grande Prairie’s top figure skaters head to Lethbridge to attend the 2018 Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Sectionals presented by the Alberta Figure Skating Foundation (provincial championships). Twelve year old Kayla Welygan and fourteen year old Abigail Fitzpatrick both showed personal best scores in their respective Juvenile U14 and Pre-Novice U16 categories. This was Kayla’s second appearance at this event, while this was the fifth provincials for Abigail. Welygan’s impressive silver medal win also earned her a spot on the Alberta Junior Development Team, an honor held by Fitzpatrick twice before. This will gain Welygan access to some of the highest coaching opportunities available in Alberta. Grande Prairie skaters can be seen showing their skills soon at the Peace Region STARSkate Invitational presented by Pomeroy Hotel and Conference Centre January 26-28, 2018 at the Coca-Cola Centre in Grande Prairie. This competition will also serve as the Northern Alberta Arctic Winter Games run-offs.
